Why you should care about Medicaid when the Public Health Emergency ends

Large Group, Small Group, Individual | CA

Since the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) began in January 2020, the number of Medicaid enrollees has grown significantly because eligibility reviews have been put on hold. When the PHE ends, states will restart their regular eligibility reviews and as many as 15 million people may lose their Medicaid coverage. These individuals will be looking for answers, guidance and health coverage, and can partner with you for help.

When will the PHE end?

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has extended the PHE in 90-day increments since January 2020 and has committed to provide states with 60 days advance notice if the agency decides to end the PHE or let it expire. The PHE is currently extended to January 11, 2023.  If HHS had decided to end the PHE on January 11, they would have issued their 60-day notice by November 12. HHS has not provided that notice and has not yet publicly confirmed when the PHE will end. As a result, we can reasonably expect that the PHE will be extended beyond January 11. If HHS extends the PHE for an additional 90 days, the new PHE end date will be in mid-April 2023.

When the PHE does end, you’ll play an important role in helping anyone losing Medicaid coverage understand all their options to stay covered. And we’ll be here supporting you with the resources and information you need to help them transition easily.
