Why you should care about Medi-Cal Disenrollments

Large Group, Small Group, Individual | CA

This is the first in a series of articles about how a new law may impact thousands of individuals who have enrolled in Medi-Cal since January 2020, and how this affects your business. Today’s article focuses on why this situation makes Medi-Cal particularly relevant to you.

During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, thousands of Medi-Cal members have been able to stay enrolled regardless of changes in their eligibility status. Legislation signed into law in December 2022, allows states to begin removing ineligible members from their Medicaid programs as early as April 1, 2023. In California, Medi-Cal disenrollments may begin as early as July 1, 2023. This means many people may no longer qualify for Medi-Cal coverage and will be looking for answers, guidance and health coverage. You can partner with them for help.

We expect many disenrolled individuals will seek coverage either through their employer or look to individual ACA-compliant plans. In California, disenrolled individuals will be automatically mapped into the lowest cost silver ACA plan available. But they can also choose a different plan, including any ACA individual plan offered by Anthem.

You play an important role in helping them understand their options to stay covered, and we’ll provide you with all the resources and information you need to help them transition easily.

States will have up to 14 months once the PHE ends to complete their eligibility reviews, so the impact may extend well into 2024. You can count on us to support you and help keep it simple throughout this period.
